Having someone else arrange matters on your behalf

Are you unable to arrange your affairs via the government's online services? Or would you simply prefer having someone else do this for you? Now you can allow others to act on your behalf when it comes to online public services. This is all thanks to 'DigiD Machtigen' (DigiD Authorisation), which enables you to permit someone else to represent you in online interactions with the government. This is a new service from DigiD. You stay in charge, while your business with the government is arranged by someone else.

Why authorisation?

You can allow someone else to arrange your affairs with the government without having to share your DigiD particulars with them. Instead, you simply authorise the person in question. 'DigiD Machtigen' permits someone else to arrange your business for you. To do this, you will need to authorise the person that helps you - perhaps a family member or a friend. We call this person your 'authorised representative'.

Requesting and managing authorisations

There are two ways to set up an authorisation. The first is the easiest.

You receive a letter from the Dutch tax authorities with the request to file your tax return this year. This letter will include an authorisation code. You provide this authorisation code to the person who will take care of your tax return. That person, your so-called 'authorised representative', fills in this code in when completing your tax return and then signs using his or her own DigiD.

If you do not yet have an authorisation code, you can request one.

Request?

You request an authorisation at machtigen.digid.nl or by calling 0800 - 023 04 35 (or +31 70 383 70 30 from abroad). An authorisation code will be sent to you by post within five days.

Pass on?

You give the authorisation code to the person you would like to authorise. It makes sense to do this quickly because your authorised representative will need this code to be able to help you.

Activate?

The authorised representative uses the authorisation code and your citizen service number ('burgerservicenummer') to activate the authorisation via machtigen.digid.nl.

Cancel?

You may withdraw your authorisation at any time at machtigen.digid.nl or by calling 0800 - 023 04 35 (or +31 70 383 70 30 from abroad).

View?

You can access an overview of all your requested and activated authorisations at any time at machtigen.digid.nl by calling 0800 - 023 04 35 (or +31 70 383 70 30 from abroad).

Facts about 'DigiD Machtigen'

  • If someone wants to arrange your business for you via the internet, the authorisation will be verified.
  • Your authorised representative may only arrange affairs for which you have given him or her specific permission.
  • You will always be notified in writing of any requests from and activations of your authorised representatives.
  • Would you like to see an overview of your authorised representatives? This is possible at any time via machtigen.digid.nl using your DigiD; an instant overview is displayed on your computer screen. If you phone, an overview will be sent to you by post.

Cancelling an authorisation

If necessary, you may simply and easily withdraw an authorisation. This means that the other person will no longer be able to act on your behalf with respect to online public services. When cancelling your authorisation by phone, you will need your citizen service number and the authorisation code that you received by post.
